Network marketing online is one home business idea that many people pursue. But starting a network marketing business and succeeding at it, are two different things.
This home business idea has gotten a bad reputation over the years, due to unscrupulous business practices and the wrong approach to finding leads. You may have heard it referred to as "multilevel marketing" or MLM. But the truth is, network marketing can be a legitimate approach to building a successful online home business, if you understand how to go about it correctly.
Network marketing online, sometimes called "Inter"net marketing, is simply a team approach to making money online through the promotion of recurring purchases of products or services. Amway is probably one of the more well-known companies in this genre. Here is a more detailed definition from SiteBuildIt:
A direct sales company markets and sells products and/or services directly to the consumer through Independent Representatives (also known as Independent Business Owners, Sales Consultants, or Distributors). Independent Representatives are paid on re-occurring personal and multi-level sales volumes of personal retail customers and other business-minded people that they recruit to join their business team.
The confusion between the terms network marketing online and MLM can be explained away by thinking of network marketing as what you do and MLM as how you get paid. Make sense?
This home business idea CAN be a legitimate idea. You just have to choose wisely, and therein lies the rub. Not all companies that offer this approach are scrupulous. Some make you spend hundreds of dollars just to be a member. So the first thing you need is common sense and some due diligence. If you hear about a company, research them online. Look for reviews and scam alerts. Read past the hype on their websites to make sure you really understand what you might be getting into. You also want to make sure there is real value to the product or service, which is something sorely lacking in many network marketing ventures.
I've tried a few network marketing businesses over the past 10 years. It wasn't a comfortable business model for me, because I am shy and I hate selling... that is, until I discovered a printable greeting cards company called SendOutCards. It's the only network marketing company I recommend, and it's something almost everyone can use, especially a home business person looking to develop relationships with business associates. But you can also use it for personal cards. It's an ethical, high quality company and it doesn't cost a lot of money to get involved.
You also have to be adept at building relationships. And I'm not talking about with your own circle of family and friends. There's only so much stuff you're going to sell them. You have to learn how to reach targeted leads, preferably online, people who are already looking for what you're trying to recommend.
Although most network marketing online companies offer you your own "website" on their servers, chances are it looks just like every other representative's website. So, it behooves you to establish an independent online presence. One of the best ways is by offering related information on a content website that gently funnels prospects towards your network marketing business opportunity.
A network marketing business can be a great money-maker, if you're successful at it. The products tend to yield significant payouts and if your network is large enough, you can earn a lot of money off the efforts of others. If you enjoy interacting with other people, it can be a lot of fun too.
Where do I start? The most obvious is that if you sign up with the wrong company, you could end up throwing away hundreds of dollars... either on their products or associated training in an effort to make a success.
If your main marketing targets are friends and family, you may also end up alienating those you care about the most. You can also lose a lot of the control over your own business, if your whole model is to use the replicated website provided by the network marketing company.
If network marketing online appeals to you, then I strongly encourage you to learn all you can about it first. Find out the keys to success... and failure. Here are some resources to get you started:
If there was just one thing I wish I'd learned when I first got started in network marketing it would have been this: I didn't need to chase down anyone to get them to join my business. After doing the whole "names list/3 foot rule" thing, I finally discovered this resource from the queen of network marketing, Ann Sieg, on how to have people come to me!
