A Business to Start From Home

Need a Work From Home Business Idea or A Home Based Business Idea or Two?

Looking for ideas for a business to start from home? If you need a work from home business idea, or in other words, a home based business idea or two, then this page is the place to start...

Which business to start from home should she choose?Going into business for yourself can be extremely exciting, but it can also be challenging. There's so much to think about. And one of the first things you'll need to decide is what type of home business might be right for you.

There are so many different types of business to start from home, from your own crafts business to freelance writing to selling Tupperware or other products at home demonstration parties. I could go on and on with the list. But...

This website is not meant to be that broad. My focus is on helping you find an online business to start from home. I'll help you come up with a home-based business idea or two that might work for you.

The good news is it's not hard to come up with a work from home business idea that you can run on the Web. Of course, there are many home business scams that you'll have to be careful to avoid. These are also known as "Get Rich Quick" ideas or GRQ for short.

If I can pass along one word of advice... there's no such thing as get rich quick! If it seems too good to be true... then it probably is. The only way to get ahead in a home-based Internet business (and stay there) is to work hard and work ethically.

So, let's take a look at a few ideas for a business to start from home that involves the use of computers and the Internet...

Earn Commissions as an Affiliate

One of the easiest—and cheapest—ways to get started with a business on the Internet is to encourage people to buy someone else's products. For your efforts, you are awarded a commission that may range from a very small percentage, such as 5% of the sales price on up to 75%. You can do this for physical products, services, and/or digital products, and it's called affiliate marketing.

But it's not necessarily as easy as it sounds to use affiliate marketing to build a business to start from home. You can't just slap an ad up on a website and expect people to buy most of the time. It helps if you understand the concept of preselling.

Build a Niche Content Site

Another idea of a business to start from home is a content site, built around a specific niche. It doesn't really require any special skill if you use the right tools, but it does help if you enjoy writing, or at least if you're passionate about a topic. The good news is, the writing you need to do for a content site need only be conversational. In other words, you write as though you were talking to a good friend. It doesn't have to sound like a term paper. So almost anyone can do it.

If you build about 30 to 50 pages minimum on a niche content site, you should be able to make money from it, eventually. First you have to make sure each page is well optimized for the search engines and that will bring in free traffic targeted to your particular niche.

Then, the next step is to monetize that traffic by putting affiliate links on your site or selling your own product or service. Or, what most people do is place some sort of contextual advertising on their pages. Contextual ads are matched to the content of the page. The most common example is Google AdSense (like the ads you see at the top and the bottom of this page), but there are plenty of AdSense alternatives these days too.

What is important is your focus. It's possible to build niche sites with what is called private label articles or content scraped from the Web. But there IS a difference between building a niche website and building a niche business. This website is an example of a niche content site. The niche is online home business and all of my content is focused around that. In fact, building niche content sites is my specialty and one of the online home business models I most recommend.

Blogging for Money

Blogging is a hot, fairly new, craze on the Internet. In case you don't know what a blog is, it's what was originally called a weblog. Somewhere along the way, the "we" was dropped off that term and it just became "blog."

Blogs started out as online journals, where people could express their personal thoughts or opinions on a topic, journal a journey of some kind, or share a passion with the world through the web.

But savvy Internet Marketers soon found out that there was "gold in them thar hills"! There are a number of ways you can make money from blogging these days for a business to start from home...

  • Build a content site through a blog. One of the beauties of using blog software like WordPress or a blogging platform like Blogger or Typepad is that you don't have to know HTML or web design to produce an attractive, well-formatted blog. So, it can be a fairly easy way to produce a content site by publishing articles as blog posts. Another great thing about blogs is that they are database driven, so all of the content is categorized and archived, which makes it easy to find later on, for both you and your visitors.

  • Post product reviews as blog entries. Another way to use a blog to make money is as an affiliate tool. You can post reviews of the products you're pushing and then include your affiliate links in them.

  • Use a blog to help promote your content or other type of site. It's a fact that search engines love blogs. Blogs get indexed and listed quite quickly, sometimes even within hours! So, linking to other sites in a blog is a great way to get the search engines to follow the links and find the other site. Of course, those links will also help your human visitors find that site. You might have found this site through my blog, HomeBiz BUZZ.

  • Get paid for blogging. It's not common, but it IS possible to get paid for blogging too, especially if you have special expertise in a topic. For example, I am paid well for blogging about asthma, COPD and allergies on a health website. Some sites, while they don't pay you directly, will let you share in revenue, such as AdSense clicks, that is earned at the site as a result of the content you've blogged.

So, you can see it IS possible to use blogging to start a business from home, if you approach it right.

Making Money With Online Surveys

It is also possible to make money online by filling out surveys. I don't think you're going to get rich doing so, but you might be able to use it as a supplement to your other efforts, so consider it a viable work from home business idea.

eBay — Another Home-Based Business Idea

Lots of people have made money on eBay, and if you enjoy that sort of thing, you can do it too. Personally, I haven't tried eBay, not because I don't believe it works, but because my interests lie elsewhere.

But it can be a viable idea for a business to start from home, if you know what you're doing. There are some different models you might explore:

  • Selling your own stuff on eBay
  • Selling drop-shipped merchandise
  • Selling cheap digital products that you use as a "loss leader" to add people to your mailing list and ultimately sell them more expensive stuff
  • Selling eBooks on eBay
  • Opening an eBay niche store

Selling Your Own Products or Services Online

Another idea for a business to start from home would be to sell your own products or services online. This is where a lot of people want to start, but it's also one of the more challenging places to start. Although a lot depends on what niche you're in...

If you have a digital product, like an eBook or software, getting set up to sell online is definitely do-able. But you do have to understand how to set up digital downloads, payment processing, and writing a sales page.

If you're just advertising your offline services, then it's more or less just a matter of setting up an online brochure type site, at least to get started.

If you make handcrafted items, there are a number of ways to sell them online. Often, you don't even need to have your own website. For instance, Cafe Press allows you to upload art that can be printed on tee shirts, mugs and hats, or even in books. A website called Etsy specializes in handmade items.

I've tried all of these methods, and I've both succeeded and failed, so lucky you... you can learn from my mistakes and my successes!

Network Marketing, AKA MultiLevel Marketing

Network marketing, AKA multilevel marketing, has gotten a bad rep over the past few years, due to a multitude of scammy MLM businesses or just poorly-conceived ones.

But it CAN be a legitimate idea for a business to start from home. You just have to choose wisely, and therein lies the rub. You also have to be adept at building relationships. And I'm not talking about with your own circle of family and friends. There's only so much stuff you're going to sell them.

You really have to develop skills of bonding with strangers and getting them to buy in to whatever opportunity you're part of. And... there has to be real value to the product or service, which is something sorely lacking in many network marketing ventures.

Here's the only network marketing company I recommend, and it's something almost everyone can use, especially a home business person looking to develop relationships with business associates.

So, in short, I've tried to provide a general overview of ideas for a business to start from home for you. Is there any model in particular that appeals to you? If so, as you move through the sections of this website, you're going to learn more about these various models and a few more too. Think about what kinds of things you enjoy doing and how much money you have to invest in your new work at home business and let those factors guide your decision about what type of business might be right for you.

Eventually, you'll get to a deciding point about which home based business idea is the best one for you. And when you get there, I'll help you start building a business to start from home, step by step!
